On the way to being potty trained!!!!!
Posted by: | CommentsSo, the Wondertwins are 27 months. A little early for potty training, for the average here in the USA. However, one of the many advantages of cloth diapering is that kids potty train on average of 1-2 years before others! We have had the potty chairs out for awhile now. Then last week my friend, who has 2 1/2 year old twins, said she was ready to start training. So, we decided to jump on the band wagon.
Zane started by going pee in the potty several times on Monday. So, I sent him and DH to the store to get some “Spiderman” underwear. Right after they left, Bree started crying that she wanted princess panties.
So, on Tuesday we went back to the store to purchase more for both… and they have been in panties/underwear since! We are still doing diapers at nap and bed, but the rest of the day, we are out of diapers.
They have been doing pretty good. Bree is best at pooping in the potty, but doesn’t really care to pee in it much. Zane can pee in the potty just about any time he is asked to sit down. Yesterday he just had 1 pee and 2 poop accidents… he isn’t much for pooping in the potty yet.
My opinion… if you want to potty train, SKIP the pull ups!!!! They are just diapers you can pull up and down! They still don’t really feel the pee. Why am I starting my kids so early? They were cloth diapered. They are use to feeling that wet warm feeling and know what it means. Disposables wick away the moisture… So, kids don’t really feel it.
While we won’t be fully potty trained for a bit, the kids are doing AWESOME!!!!! We are giving chocolate graham bears from Whole Foods as a treat (though DH found them last night and took care of about 3/4 of the bag
). They are excited an have been making it to the potty more than not. We also have a little b’jorn potty that we move around. So, the potty is always really nearby, making less chance for accidents!
It certainly isn’t SIMPLE with twins, but it is going much easier than I thought. Anyway, wish us LUCK!!!!!

Breast feeding doesn’t have to be all or nothing… & a GIVEAWAY!!!!!!
Posted by: | CommentsI breastfed my twins. It is one of my greatest accomplishments. But, it was no easy task.
At first I was told I shouldn’t introduce any formula, bottles, or pacifiers, because then my kids wouldn’t breastfeed. Unfortunately, I had two preemie babies that needed food, and I wasn’t producing enough. I pumped and pumped, I took fenugreek… I couldn’t produce enough. I started getting stressed, which made my milk go down.
I finally saw the most wonderful lactation consultant in the world! She was so supportive, told me I was Super Woman, and best of all, she told me not to stress. She said, “Only do as much as you can. Don’t worry about what you can’t do.” I learned, that breast feeding does NOT have to be an “all or nothing” thing. So, I started with trying to get them to the breast at least once a day, and I tried to pump at least 3 times a day. Sounds easy enough, but it wasn’t! I had two tiny infants that had no idea what day/night was, much less, what staying on a similar schedule meant!
Eventually, I worked my way up to doing most feedings by breast during the day. Yet, I never was able to exclusively breast feed. But, that was OK with me. Why?! Because I was doing what I could for my babies, and that was what was best for us.
I do think breast milk is the best and most nutritious food for infants. I breast fed Zane for 19 months and Bree for about 16. However, like in my situation, it isn’t always feasible for a mom to provide ONLY breastmilk… and some may not be able to at all. For at least the first year, I didn’t breast feed both at night. I was so exhausted all the time. So, Brett would feed one formula while I fed the other breast milk or a bottle of formula. The next feeding, we would switch. That is what worked for us.
So, this leads me to my first giveaway!!!!!! Yes, a giveaway!!!!! This is sponsored by Parents Choice. This is a brand that can be found at Walmart. It has the same nutrition as some of the leading brands, but at a fraction of the price! Here are some notes from Parent’s Choice:
Raising Healthy Babies without Skimping on Nutrition
There is good news for families with small babies who are looking for big savings without compromising nutrition.
Experts agree that mother’s milk is best and the least expensive option for infant feeding. If parents choose to supplement breastfeeding with infant formula or to formula-feed exclusively, they can turn to Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, Kroger, Walgreens, and other retailers for store brands that offer the same safe, high quality, affordable infant nutrition.
Although all U.S. infant formulas must adhere to the same stringent FDA guidelines, they are not priced the same, as many leading store-brand formulas cost up to 50% less than national brands. In fact, parents can save up to $600 a year ($1200 for twins) by choosing a retailer’s store brand infant formula.
“A new parent today is met with a dizzying array of marketing messages when it comes to doing what is best for their babies,” said Dr. Barbara Levine, Associate Professor of Nutrition in Medicine, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. “Nowhere is this truer than in the area of infant formulas. Thanks to strict government regulation, the fact is that there is very little, if any, differentiation in the nutritional values touted by the various national brands on the market, and in this economy, doctors are advising parents to switch their babies to a store brand formula so they can save money.”
FDA, in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition, establishes strict guidelines concerning the ingredients and their levels in infant formula; all U.S. manufacturers must conform to these rules. In addition, all infant formulas must demonstrate growth, development, and mineral absorption equal to mother’s milk before they may be sold in the United States.
In light of a recent press report of a parent diluting baby formula with water in this difficult economy, Dr. Levine urges parents to read and strictly follow the directions on the labels of their formulas of choice.
In addition to switching to store brand formulas, parents can save money on infant feeding by:
* Contacting their local service and religious organizations – state WIC agencies, local food banks, and churches may be able to offer additional assistance.
* Look for coupons on the Internet and save money on items such as baby formula and diapers.
“It is critical that parents refrain from diluting baby formula with extra water during these tough economic times,” added Dr. Levine. “If parents choose to feed babies infant formula, they must remember it is an infant’s sole source of nutrition.”

Toddlers love to shut doors… my easy solution
Posted by: | CommentsRecently, we redid some of the rooms. So instead of sharing a room, the kids each have their own room. Both rooms are pretty much baby proofed. They now have run of the whole house, minus the bathroom and our bedroom. They are so much happier!
One problem I have found is the doors. We have handle covers on the “no enter” areas. Those are doing a good job of stopping them, but they LOVE to shut the doors to their rooms! The last couple of days have found one child on one side screaming to get into the room as the other has shut the door. I wasn’t sure what to do. I know they have all sorts of locks and babyproofing stuff… but things cost money.
This morning I had a brilliant, but so simple idea. If it had been a snake it would have bit me! I put a folded towel over the top of the door! Now, it won’t shut fingers (which hasn’t happened, but likely would at some point) and no one can shut the doors! In addition, a towel is so easy to remove to shut the door for nap.
Feeding toddlers resource
Posted by: | CommentsTwin ToddlersDad over at little stomaks has a survey group of posts featuring parents from all over the world. The title is Global Toddlers. His topic is “feeding toddlers.” We had the opportunity to be a part of this survey. Our post is here. This is an excellent resource for ideas on what to feed your toddlers and to hear from other parents who might have feeding issues. Our issue has been Zane’s “picky eating” habits.
He has twin boys. His blog is similar in that it shares experiences, tips, etc.
Check it out!!!!!!!

Twins’ Second Birthday: A Yo Gabba Gabba Cake and Party
Posted by: | CommentsOn the 20th the Wondertwins turned 2! In honor of their LOVE for Yo Gabba Gabba we chose that for the theme. The weather was chilly, but sunny and dry. The kids had a blast having a dance party, chasing bubbles, and eating bagels, fruit, and cake. The parents enjoyed a nice cup o’joe.
I made their “Brobee Cake”. It was really simple. Here are the basic directions.
Ingredients:
2 containers of room temperature, frosting (we chose cream cheese)
1 box of cake mix (we went with carrot cake)
1 bag of coconut flakes
1 black licorice strip
1 fruit strip (we did Fruit-a-bu organic)
Green, yellow, and green food coloring
3 strawberries of similar size
Directions:
Follow the directions to make a 9×13 cake. Make sure your pan is thoroughly greased (I use natural unsalted butter instead of shortening). Let it cool for an hour. Then, place a cutting board flush against the pan so you can flip it over accurately, leaving the pan behind.
Cut the cake in half using a bread knife (this helps reduce the crumbling. Place one half (sideways) on a foil lined cookie sheet. Cut the other into 4 long strips. Leave the end strip, in case you make a mistake and need it as a replacement piece.
Cut an angle on the end of two strips so you create the long arms. Cut the 4th strip in half to make two short legs. Use icing between the pieces to assemble the body shape on the cookie sheet.
Cover the body pieces in frosting. You will get pieces of the cake crumbles in the frosting. That is OK at this step. Just make sure ALL of the cake is covered, especially the cut sides.
Put the cake in the fridge for 1/2 hour. This will allow the frosting to harden.
While the cake is in the fridge, put a cup of coconut flakes in a ziploc baggie. Add 2 drops of green food coloring and 5 of yellow. Shut the bag and use your hands to move the flakes around, coating them to the desired color. You may have to add more food coloring.
Use a 2nd bag to place 1/2 cup of coconut flakes. Just use green in this one. I think I used about 5-6 drops of green to get a DARK green color.
In a 3rd bag, put about 1 TBS of the 2nd container of icing in it. Add red food coloring until you get a bright red color. Try to keep the colored icing in the one corner.
Cut a U shape (Brobee’s mouth) out of a fruit strip. Cut the corner off the red colored icing bag and use that to outline the smile (or frown… whichever way you choose to put his mouth).
Now the cake should be hardened. Take it out of the fridge and use the rest of the icing to put a 2nd layer on the cake. This should cover the parts with crumbs in it. After icing, immediately cover the iced cake with the green/yellow flakes.
When that has been completed, use a torn piece of paper to cover most of the cake and leave exposed the areas you wish to have the dark green strips. Put the dark green coconut in those areas. This makes the stripes distinct… and helps to keep the coconut from getting on the other parts of the cake.
Put white icing in the empty corner of the icing bag (or use a new one). Cut off the corner. Use this to create the oval eyes on the cake.
Put the fruit strip/icing mouth on. Cut an end off the black licorice and cut about a 3 inch piece, to create the uni-brow. Cut two more little piece to make the center of the eyes.
Put the 3 strawberries at the top… and TA-DA!!!! You have a Brobee cake!!!!!
I also used FREE online printables and t-shirts to create iron-on image shirts for all the kiddie guests. In addition, I printed off pictures and cut them out to make a Yo Gabba poster.
Our party was a hit… and fairly inexpensive!
Good day… and only spent $1
Posted by: | CommentsThe kids slept until 7:30… which was GREAT, since I had stayed up past midnight reading Twilight. We got up and going. Then headed to the mall. We got there around 10, just as Starbucks opened. I got my favorite Americano, and we headed to the play area.
We got to the mall play area almost every Sunday morning. The mall doesn’t “officially” open until noon. So, there are usually only a few parents who have discovered my secret others there. The kids can run walk through the mall without bothering anyone. I highly recommend it for a sanity keeper way for the kids to get energy out.
We played with a friend. Then headed to the food court for a lunch of chicken and apples. We came home for the kids to nap.
They woke. We played. We watched a Yo Gabba Gabba. Then, we packed up and headed to Harris Teeter.
There I got a $1 movie from Redbox. The kids got balloons, cheese samples, and a cookie (all FREE). Then we went out to the covered walks. They ran from one end of the strip to the other. We did this for about 30 min. I’m sure I got SOME exercise out of it too!
We came home. As we got out of the van, B stepped in a puddle. It cracked her up. So she and Z proceeded to jump and play in the puddles for about 5 minutes (Of course I had to video tape some! lol). We came in, I stripped them down, and they immediately went into the tub.
After bath they ate, we skyped with hubby, and did our bed routine.
Our day was pretty uneventful, but the kids had a blast. They smiled a lot… and I smiled a lot. There was a lot of happiness today. And that is all that matters.
Keep toddlers busy for hours!
Posted by: | CommentsThe kids were getting antsy. So, I searched through the cupboards and found a bag of popcorn kernels and a bag of pinto beans. I dumped them into a large plastic container, added a few measuring cups/spoons… BAMMMM! Instant toy, exploratory/learning experience, and something to keep them busy. They played for over an hour! I highly recommend it! Plus, it was fairly inexpensive. I covered it up… now we will have it for another day.
