Breast feeding doesn’t have to be all or nothing… & a GIVEAWAY!!!!!!

By Admin On June 30, 2009 Under Breastfeeding, Featured Post, Money Savers, Twins

I breastfed my twins. It is one of my greatest accomplishments. But, it was no easy task.

At first I was told I shouldn’t introduce any formula, bottles, or pacifiers, because then my kids wouldn’t breastfeed. Unfortunately, I had two preemie babies that needed food, and I wasn’t producing enough. I pumped and pumped, I took fenugreek… I couldn’t produce enough. I started getting stressed, which made my milk go down.

I finally saw the most wonderful lactation consultant in the world! She was so supportive, told me I was Super Woman, and best of all, she told me not to stress. She said, “Only do as much as you can. Don’t worry about what you can’t do.” I learned, that breast feeding does NOT have to be an “all or nothing” thing. So, I started with trying to get them to the breast at least once a day, and I tried to pump at least 3 times a day. Sounds easy enough, but it wasn’t! I had two tiny infants that had no idea what day/night was, much less, what staying on a similar schedule meant!

Eventually, I worked my way up to doing most feedings by breast during the day. Yet, I never was able to exclusively breast feed. But, that was OK with me. Why?! Because I was doing what I could for my babies, and that was what was best for us.

Photobucket

I do think breast milk is the best and most nutritious food for infants. I breast fed Zane for 19 months and Bree for about 16. However, like in my situation, it isn’t always feasible for a mom to provide ONLY breastmilk… and some may not be able to at all. For at least the first year, I didn’t breast feed both at night. I was so exhausted all the time. So, Brett would feed one formula while I fed the other breast milk or a bottle of formula. The next feeding, we would switch. That is what worked for us.

So, this leads me to my first giveaway!!!!!! Yes, a giveaway!!!!! This is sponsored by Parents Choice. This is a brand that can be found at Walmart. It has the same nutrition as some of the leading brands, but at a fraction of the price! Here are some notes from Parent’s Choice:

milk-based_newRaising Healthy Babies without Skimping on Nutrition

There is good news for families with small babies who are looking for big savings without compromising nutrition.

Experts agree that mother’s milk is best and the least expensive option for infant feeding. If parents choose to supplement breastfeeding with infant formula or to formula-feed exclusively, they can turn to Walmart, Sam’s Club, Target, Kroger, Walgreens, and other retailers for store brands that offer the same safe, high quality, affordable infant nutrition.

Although all U.S. infant formulas must adhere to the same stringent FDA guidelines, they are not priced the same, as many leading store-brand formulas cost up to 50% less than national brands. In fact, parents can save up to $600 a year ($1200 for twins) by choosing a retailer’s store brand infant formula.

“A new parent today is met with a dizzying array of marketing messages when it comes to doing what is best for their babies,” said Dr. Barbara Levine, Associate Professor of Nutrition in Medicine, Weill Medical College of Cornell University. “Nowhere is this truer than in the area of infant formulas. Thanks to strict government regulation, the fact is that there is very little, if any, differentiation in the nutritional values touted by the various national brands on the market, and in this economy, doctors are advising parents to switch their babies to a store brand formula so they can save money.”

FDA, in conjunction with the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition, establishes strict guidelines concerning the ingredients and their levels in infant formula; all U.S. manufacturers must conform to these rules. In addition, all infant formulas must demonstrate growth, development, and mineral absorption equal to mother’s milk before they may be sold in the United States.

In light of a recent press report of a parent diluting baby formula with water in this difficult economy, Dr. Levine urges parents to read and strictly follow the directions on the labels of their formulas of choice.

In addition to switching to store brand formulas, parents can save money on infant feeding by:

* Contacting their local service and religious organizations – state WIC agencies, local food banks, and churches may be able to offer additional assistance.
* Look for coupons on the Internet and save money on items such as baby formula and diapers.

“It is critical that parents refrain from diluting baby formula with extra water during these tough economic times,” added Dr. Levine. “If parents choose to feed babies infant formula, they must remember it is an infant’s sole source of nutrition.”

The Parent’s Choice Infant Formula Web site – www.parentschoiceformula.com offers:

* Free baby formula samples http://www.parentschoiceformula.com/baby-formula-samples.aspx
* A savings calculator http://www.parentschoiceformula.com/baby-formula-savings-calculator.aspx
* A formula finder http://www.parentschoiceformula.com/parents-choice-formula-finder.aspx

In addition, we have a facebook fan site http://www.facebook.com/pages/Parents-Choice-Infant-Formula/31916575476, complete with an application that allows fans to give one another free formula http://apps.facebook.com/parent_choice/

What an awesome post! I breastfed my twins for 7 and 8 months when they weaned due to decreased supply, and I supplemented with formula the entire way. I wished I could supply enough, but my milk supply just wasn’t large enough. Like you, I believe it was the best nutrition, and so I did as much as I could and focused on that! Kudos to you for spreading the word to twin moms everywhere. Do what you can and focus on that!

We actually used the Parent’s Choice Gentle Formula because both of our girls had reflux. It saved us a lot of money and was just as good as the major competitor brand gentle formula. Plus it came in larger cans, which with twins, was great!

I visited the Parent’s Choice site to see what is new there, and learned that they now have an organic formula. I don’t believe they had that when I was using their product line, or at least not in my store. What a great option!

Hey, C! I didn’t know that Parents’ Choice had baby meals. My little miss sometimes enjoys those kinds of dinners, instead of something ‘regular’ so I like to have them on-hand. I’ll have to check it out in Walmart and see what I can find out about them!

Oh, and as always, love that pic of you w. the twins. Amazing!!!

Also, I’m subscribing to your blog! :D Looking forward to the updates!

Love the post! I agree with you 110% that it doesnt have to be all or nothing! My little C had many struggles with feeding and it started from day 1, as he was a 33 week preemie. I was determined to get my milk into him though, and also had an excellent LC who helped me.

With her help and my stubborn attitude, my little C breastfed for 16 glorious months. Lots of pumping happened to, as did formula feeding.

I LEARNED THAT Parents CHOICE has LACTOSE FREE formula. WHO KNEW???

WoW!!!! I just went to the product calculator and I am AMAZED at how much Parent’s Choice is saving me a year!!!! My son is a very very very picky eater and rarely eats so by his pediatricians recommendation he is getting the Older Infant formula (he’s 2 1/2) so that he’s getting the recommended % of Daily Vitamins. I started with the Enfamil Lipil Next Step and I bought the Parent’s Choice one day because they were out of Next Step. My son drank the Parent’s Choice just as good as he did the Enfamil brand and by comparrison on the can, they’re nearly identical so I stuck with it. I knew I saved a “few dollars” per can but never did I realize just how much until now! I am saving an awesome $58 per month!!!! That gives me a savings of $696 per year! Holy Cow I didn’t realize how that savings was adding up. THANK YOU PARENT’S CHOICE FOR KEEPING THAT MUCH NEEDED MONEY IN SINGLE MOMMY’S POCKET!!!

SUCH a wonderful picture, C. You are so inspiring to me, you just don’t know. Who would have thought that Parents Choice would be manufactured in the only ISO certified manufacturing facility in the U.S. I’m very impressed!

I was thrilled to learn about the ready made meals. Since I breastfeed, I do not venture to the formula isle, so I missed this all together. I do buy the alternative brand which is costly at almost $3 a meal. These are great to carry when traveling. I will check them out for sure next time I’m in Wally World! Thanks for sharing.

Your page is so fun! I didnt know that Parents choice had an organic line or a gassy line (that sounds silly), I also didnt know that I saved almost $600 a year by their calculator thingy! We started feeding parents choice after the first few months of the expensive brands….and I thought it had a ton less bubbles than the name brand we were using! Hope I win the GC–but then again who doesnt! :)

So somehow it looks like my first comment didnt post–so if it shows up later sorry for the duplicate.
I never knew Parents choice had an organic, gassy, etc line. We always just bought the “regular” stuff. I also didnt have any clue how much i was saving until I used their cool calculator on their site! I am for sure going to tell all my mommy friends! I also am excited to try their toddler meals for on the go, etc and their snacks!
Hope I win the CG (but who doesnt :) )

My twins and I suffered from low production, lost latches, and other health issues, so we only made it about six weeks on EBM. I’m very familiar with the Parents Choice brand of formula, but was surprised to learn about their Little Meal options! Back when my twins were eating baby food (they’re almost 5 now), I am pretty sure our cupboards would have been filled with nothing but the Chicken Rice Little Meals!

Hey, I can not subscribe by email. The feed does not allow it? Get Brett on this :) I do not have twins but a very hungry 5 month old. My original goal after birth was to exclusively breastfeed her until 6 months (pumping into bottles as well). Now that she is getting bigger and taking well to breastfeeding, I would love to keep it up until she is 8-12 months. At first Olivia would not even take to breastfeeding. She finally started at 3 weeks old, unheard of after taking bottles for the first few weeks of her life. The lactation consultant kept teling me that once I went to bottles she would not go back to the breast, but she does just fine.

Once I supplement some formula in with regular feedings, the options look endless. PARENT’S CHOICE offers an added rice formula to help babies with spit-up issues. I have noticed that Olivia spits up more, so maybe this formula will help her keep her food down? Interesting!

Great idea. I’m breastfeeding my girls (3 months today) and also supplement with formula. I’m glad I’m not the only one doing it like that. Is not easy to BF in public, so giving them the bottle has made my life so much easier.

Now, I went to the parent’s choice formula website, by the way, that is all I used with my son, and learned that the milk based with rice starch was for babies who spit up a lot. I have that problem with the smaller twin and had never heard of the rice starch. I have to ask her Dr. to see if she thinks that giving her that formula is going to help!

We actually used the Parents Choice formula with my daughter and will do so for the next one! I took some time to check out the website and realized that they produce fruit snacks, too! I had no idea as my local Wal-Mart doesn’t carry them! I’ll have to look for them the next time I go to a different Wal-Mart.

I also saw that Parents Choice produces the little puffs (like Gerber does). I will need to try these because the other brands are so expensive (and the puffs are SO yummy). I’m sure Parents Choice will be just a good and cheaper!

By the way, I tried to sign up for your blog, but the feeder isn’t working or something. I’ll check back later!

I was planning to supplement breastfeeding with Carnation Good Start, but I have learned on the Parents Choice site the incredible amount we can save. It is the same quality. With our large family, we have to save where we can. I love shopping at Walmart and will be trying the Parents Choice brand. Learned a lot. I will be interested in other products in this line as well.

Blessings!!!!

I am expecting twin boys at the end of August and am happy to learn from the Parents Choice website that there are multiple kinds of formula to choose from! I love how they have organic and immune support formula just in case I deliver early (which is highly possible with twins)! I subscribed to the website and will retweet this on twitter @amyandrews

Parents Choice offers free formula samples on their web site! I also am surprised to see that they offer organic formula too. I’m not really into all thigns organic, but I know a lot of parents are. I wish they had a high calorie formula for preemies. I had to use that with my twins, and I could have saved a TON of money if Parent’s Choice made something similar to Similac Neosure.

I use the Parent’s Choice Organic Formula. They claim that it is comparable to Similac organic but actually it’s better. When I checked the ingredient profile it was comparable to Earth’s Best Organic Formula (which was what I was using prior to Parent’s Choice). Once I found out that these two formulas were comparable I called the 1-800 number on Parent’s Choice and told them that they really need to market themselves differently…….after all, being compared to Earth Best Organic has more power than Similac Organic in my eyes as a dietitian. I breast fed for 7 months but will be using Parent’s Choice Organic formula until my little man is the big numero 1!

I didn’t know that Parent’s Choice gave free samples. Nor did I know they had food.

I tried to breastfeed my twins, but none of us really caught on. After pumping for three months, we switched exclusively to Parent’s Choice formula. I compared the labels of the different brands, and who wouldn’t pay half the price for the same thing? Both of my children did very well on it.

I couldn’t subscribe to your blog by email, either. :(

I truly wished I had known about Parent’s Choice with my first two babies but at least now I can incorporate Parent’s Choice into my 8 month old baby now. Thanks so much for sharing your breast feeding story with us too! This is what I learned from visiting Parent’s Choice:

“The growth of “good” bacteria in a baby’s intestines and colon has a number of positive effects. First, the “good” bacteria help support a baby’s existing immune defenses. Second, higher levels of “good” bacteria create a protective environment that prevents disadvantageous types of bacteria to flourish.

Our Immune Support baby formula also contains a blend of nutrients found naturally in mother’s milk, including choline and the lipids DHA and ARA, which are associated with infant brain and eye development.

Compare to Leading Immune Support Brands

Feel free to compare prebiotic baby formulas:

Parent’s Choice Immune Support Infant Formula is nutritionally comparable to leading immune support brands
Parent’s Choice Immune Support Infant Formula is available to moms and dads at a savings of up to 25 percent on a price per fl oz basis.*”

I am actually heading to Walmart Super Store this afternoon to get food for the holiday and I plan to pick some of this up! I can’t wait to start using it now. Thank you so much for sharing this with us and for the wonderful chance to enter.

I learned that Parents’ Choice also offers a high calorie supplement Pediatric Drink {compare to PediaSure} for failure to thrive babies. As the mom of a FTT preemie, we spent oodles and oodles on PediaSure. Even years later, after an illness when we need to nurse him back to health and try and recover the lost weight, we turn to high calorie supplements like this to regain what we lost.

I agree that breast is best, but it isn’t always possible. It’s reassuring to know that these babies can still grow up healthy and strong with reliable nutrition.

Congrats on your long-term nursing success!
