Cheap Adventures For Toddlers and Mommies

By Admin

Having multiples often makes money tight. For me, staying at home was/is a blessing and a difficult situation. Finding places to get out has been instrumental. Not only does it give me a chance to be around other adults, it gives the kids a chance to be around other kids to play and learn.

Here are some places we have found that work for us:

Local Libraries
Ours has a daily story time. We go to one specific for toddlers. They sing songs, do rhymes, and read a book. The kids love learning the signs and our daughter sings the songs all the time!

Parks - This one is obvious … however, not all parks are created equal. I have searched online to find parks around my area. We tried many different ones and found the ones that work best for us. I specifically look for play areas that are somewhat enclosed (kids can’t run off easily), have play structures more “toddler friendly” in size, and close enough to the parking lot that it is not difficult to transport 2-3 toddlers, but not so close they can run into the parking lot. I also try to go during times when there are fewer people, but it is not totally empty. Too many people make it harder to watch multiple kids. However, having a few people makes things safer. You don’t want to be there alone and someone dangerous approach, nor do you want something to happen and there not be someone there to help you!

Mall play area
We have a few malls that have some good play areas. One has riding toys right outside of it. I don’t like this one because the kids are drawn to them and it is hard to keep them contained sometimes. We don’t go to that one as often, even though it is the closest. The one we like the most is perfect for toddlers and mostly fenced … which makes it easy to keep an eye on them.

With mall play areas, one key thing is to work on the timing. There are times when they are most crowded. I try to avoid those times to avoid the children getting hurt or to make it easier to keep an eye on them. First thing in the morning is good. Since we are early risers this is perfect for us. Usually, they open for mall walkers around 9ish. If we miss this time we try to go for an early lunch, then go in around noon. Most of the other players are eating lunch. So, it is just a few toddlers.

Museums
There are many free museums around the nation that contain a wealth of exploratory/learning opportunities for all ages. Many are free! You just need to search your area. Then, check their schedule and see if they have any programs geared towards your children’s age group.

You can also buy a pass to a local museum. Though this isn’t free, this does have great advantages in the long run. We have the Durham Museum of Life and Science. They have animals, a butterfly atrium, an awesome playground, and a toddler/baby area. We paid about $70 for a year pass. Since we go at least twice a month we have more than gotten our use out of it! In addition, we can get two adults in with our pass… and kids 3 and under are free. So, I will plan a play date with another mommy friend. We all go and use our pass. They get to enjoy the musuem and our company at no price, my kids get play mates, and I get to spend time with my friends!
